I’ve typically been the kind of Fringer who rarely goes to shows. I typically like the street performers, the people-watching, and the mini-donuts. However, in recent years this has been changing, due in part to the fact that a lot of old friends and acquaintances are flexing their Fringe muscles, either acting in plays, producing them, or simply vowing to go to as many shows as possible.

This year, leveraging the podcasting medium, I decided (along with my co-host) to find out what it’s like to be a first-time Fringer — you know, those creative geniuses who forfeit their sanity and energy and pour it all into taking part in a show. On the podcast The Unknown Studio, we set out to give listeners a feel for what’s involved in… well, in being involved. The sacrifices that have to be made, the mad love and heartbreak of rehearsing constantly, and the sheer volume of caffeine that is consumed in the production, staging and execution of a Fringe play.

We take a look at all these issues through the eyes of first-time Fringers Mike Young and Simon Crowley, the co-writers of Captain Hook versus the Zombies. Download the latest from the Unknown Studio here or subscribe to us on iTunes.
